AVOIDING THE "SUCCESSION CLIFF":
PLANNING YOUR NEXT FINANCE TEAM
Planning for staffing changes in an organization is important, and when it comes to your organization's finance team, it is especially critical to prepare. Whether it's a matter of seeking a replacement for a departing finance staff member, or needing to grow your finance team to meet capacity, creating a thoughtful process with an eye towards racial equity and social justice can ensure your succession planning is a success, in addition to paving the way towards deepened alignment and stability within your organization.
We invite you to join us for a virtual panel discussion where panelists will share their experiences and insights on finance team planning while looking back at the process of building internal leadership in finance as part of a broader succession planning effort that centers the importance of social justice values and racial equity. Panelists will include CompassPoint's Executive Director Shannon Ellis, CompassPoint's Finance Director Monica Marie Avery, Diverge Finance's Chief Executive Officer Shétu Rose, and Diverge's Chief Learning Officer Curt Klotz, CPA, with the discussion moderated by Melanate. Founder and Borealis Philanthropy Vice President of Advancement Sadé Dozan.
The panel will offer tools for addressing succession planning for nonprofit finance roles, the lack of racial diversity and social justice-aligned candidates to fill nonprofit finance positions, as well as the social forces underlying these trends in finance staffing and how they impact day-to-day finance functions.
This panel discussion is open to...
1. People in nonprofit finance who are considering transitioning from their current roles.
2. Executive Directors looking to replace departing finance staff or grow their finance team.
3. People in programming roles who are interested in moving into finance operations.
Attendees will:
- Learn tactics for enacting a succession planning program in their organizations
- Gain insights into the experiences of program staff who have moved into positions in finance operations
- Identify the importance of not just racial diversity in finance operations but also hiring racially diverse candidates who hold a social justice ethic
- Understand the lack of entry level pathways to finance operations positions in the nonprofit sector and how that perpetuates a lack of diversity amongst finance operations staff.
